Stained Glass Window
Project Journal
March 11, 2008
David continues working on the assembly of the window, adding one piece of glass at a time.
The window grows slowly.
Michelle prepares the border pieces of the window for the application of the inscription, by covering the pieces with a resist material and them cutting out the Hebrew letters, exposing the glass underneath. A specialized paint is applied to the exposed glass.
Michelle applies the paint to the border pieces of the window, creating a thick, even coat.
After drying, the resist is removed, leaving the powdered paint, temporarily adhered to the glass.
Finally, the glass pieces are placed into an electric kiln, which fires the glass to a temperature at which the paint fuses to the glass, becoming a permanent part of it. This is the actual act of "staining" the glass.
